Mikel Arteta's men were looking to bounce back with a victory in Switzerland and wasted no time in controlling proceedings as expected.
Arteta's Brazilian attacking summer signing Marquinhos, opened the scoring for the Gunners in the 16th minute after a brilliant effort to give the visitors the lead.
However, Zurich soon roared back into the game after Eddie Nketiah conceded a reckless penalty in the final stages of the first half.
Kosovar defender Mirlind Kryeziu stepped up and slotted past Matt Turner in the 44th minute to level matters just before the break.

During the break, the tragic news of the passing away of Queen Elizabeth II broke around the globe and the restart of the second half was delayed as both teams paid their respects to the late queen who was known to be a fan of the Premier League club.
Arsenal continued to dominate in the second period and once again assumed the lead after goalscorer Marquinhos found Nketiah who made up for his error in the first half and slotted past Yanick Brecher in the 62nd minute.
Nketiah's goal was the last action of the sceond period as Gabriel Jesus also did come close to extending the visitors' lead.
However, it finished in favour of Arsenal who began their Europa League campaign with a win on Thursday evening.
