Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski was announced as the winner of the Laureus Academy Exceptional Achievement Award on Sunday, April 24, 2022.
'There is no sport without peace' - Lewandowski, Asamoah among 2022 Laureus award winners
Lewandowski and Asamoah were among the winners of the 2022 Laureus award.
The 33-year-old won the award for scoring 41 goals in the 2020/21 Bundesliga season for Bayern Munich surpassing Gerd Muller's record.
He also had a role with UNICEF as an ambassador as he has visited refugee camps in Syria and made donations to help families on the ground in Ukraine.
The recognition for Lewandowski comes after he beat Lionel Messi to the FIFA Best Player award earlier in the year.
Upon receiving the award, Lewandowski said, "It means a lot to be recognised and appreciated by legends from all over the world of sport.
Professional sport is a great passion and joy but not only fun. Responsibility comes with success. Nelson Mandela said, ‘Sport has the power to change the world’. Let’s remember and repeat this message loudly, especially these days, when innocent people in Ukraine are dying. There is no sport without peace.”
Gerald Asamoah a prominent black player on a previous German national team won the Laureus Athlete Advocate of the Year Award
He won the award for the Black Eagles documentary. Speaking about the award Asamoah said, "I am very proud to receive the Laureus Award on behalf of the entire Black Eagles team 🙏🏿
'Racism is a huge problem in football and in society as a whole. We need to talk about racism in order to fight it. That's why the Black Eagles documentary is so important.
"I thank everyone who contributed to the film. And I thank everyone who is committed to diversity on and off the pitch. You make the world a better place!

Other winners include teenage tennis star Emma Raducanu who picked up the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award for winning the US Open.
Italy Men’s Football Team picked up the Laureus World Team of the Year Award after winning Euro 2020.
Max Verstappen in 2021 was the winner of the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award after beating Lewis Hamilton to the Formula One title.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady won the Lifetime Achievement Award, Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah won the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award while Italian motorcycle legend Valentino Rossi won the Laureus Sporting Icon Award.
