Nigerian Athletes that participated at the IAAF Indoor Championships have returned empty handed from Birmingham, England, as athletics officials abandon athletes.

Nigeria for the fifth consecutive time participated at the IAAF Indoor Championships, but were unable to win any medals as officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) were unavailable to unavailable to attend to them.

The official said, “There was no official from the AFN on ground to Shepherd the athletes. There was a case of an athlete who did not have the proper documentation, the athlete was declared ineligible as there was no technical official to help iron the issues. “

The official then revealed that former AFN president Solomon Ogba who was in Birmingham as a guest of the IAAF, had to step in to help the athletes.

The official concluded by suggesting that this is a sign to come as Nigeria continues preparation for the upcoming 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“What happened here in Birmingham is just a picture of things to come at the Commonwealth Games,” the official concluded.

Sprint Hurdler Tobiloba Amusan was Nigeria’s best performer at the indoor Games, as she made into the final as one of the best losers but finished seventh.

Nigeria started the competition with 400m athlete Patience Okon-George failing to show up for her heat.

Also in the 400m event, Chidi Okezie finished 17 out of 18 contesting participants, while the 4x400 women relay team were absent for reasons unknown.

This development comes after Mike Edwards dumped Great Britain to participate for Nigeria at the upcoming 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games is scheduled to take place in Gold Coast, Australia from Wednesday, April 4 to Sunday, April 15.
