FIBAWC Qualifiers: Nigeria's D'Tigers lose 79-71 to Cape Verde in group opener

D'Tigers started their journey to the 2023 FIBA World Cup on a losing note.

Nigeria's senior men's basketball team known as D'Tigers' suffered a 79-71 loss to Cape Verde on Friday, November 26, 2021.

The was D'Tigers' first group game in the qualification series for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

D'Tigers are drawn in group A of the qualification series along with Mali, Cape Verde, and Uganda.

After a disappointing outing at the Olympic Games and FIBA Afrobasket earlier this year, D'Tigers were hoping to bounce back in style against Cape Verde.

The game against Cape Verde took place in Benguela. D'Tigers took the first quarter 20-18.

Cape Verde bounced back to take the second quarter 16-15 but D'Tigers went to the halftime break ahead.

D'Tigers bounced back to take the third quarter 20-17 to increase their lead. However, it was in the fourth quarter that Cape Verde took control with a 28-16 run to seal the win.

D'Tigers are missing so many key players such as Precious Achiuwa of the Toronto Raptors, Jordan Nwora of the Milwaukee Bucks, KZ Okpala, and Gabe Vincent of Miami Heat along with several others.

Ben Uzoh was the star of D'Tigers almost recording a triple-double in this fixture.

He recorded 11 points, eight rebounds, and 11 assists. Other key contributors include Keith Omoerah with 13 points, Tarekeyi Andrew Edogi with 10 points, and Ike Diogu also adding 13 points.

D'Tigers continue their qualification campaign for the FIBA 2023 World Cup when they take on Mali in their second group stage fixture scheduled for Saturday, November 27, 2021.
