Djokovic beat Bjorn Fratangelo- 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 while fourth-seeded Rafael Nadal defeated Luxembourg's Gilles Muller 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Fifth seed Kei Nishikori advanced to the third round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan, while number seven seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overcame compatriot Vincent Millot 7-5 6-1.

Dominic Thiem defeated Jozef Kovalik 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/3) while Jack Sock progressed to the third round after the American beat Michael Berrer 6-2 6-4.
