United States Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has lashed out at the PGA for snubbing his Doral course and moving the World Golf Championships to Mexico.

The leading players on the PGA Tour have turned out at Doral every year for more than half a century, but the Trump-owned course will come off the schedule in 2017.

It was revealed by the PGA that it was unable to attract sufficient sponsorship for the tournament to be staged at the Miami course, so it will be held in Mexico City from next year.

Trump said: "The PGA Tour has put profit ahead of thousands of American jobs, millions of dollars in revenue for local communities and charities and the enjoyment of hundreds of thousands of fans who make the tournament an annual tradition.

"This decision only further embodies the very reason I am running for president of the United States."

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said the decision to relocate had to be made.

"From a golf standpoint, we have no issues with Donald Trump. From a political standpoint, we are neutral," he explained.

"The PGA Tour has never been involved or cares to be involved in presidential politics."

He added: "It's fundamentally a sponsorship issue."
