Gael Monfils was accused of tanking during his Western and Southern Open first-round exit as fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon also departed.

Pole Jerzy Janowicz completed a 6-4 7-5 win over French 14th seed Monfils, who was at the centre of controversy in Cincinnati.

Two-time US Open champion Tracy Austin was unhappy with some of Monfils' efforts and speed of play, accusing him of tanking.

"To not give 100 per cent and be so blatant about it, I think it's disrespectful," she said on the Tennis Channel.

"It looked like exhibition tennis. We've seen that way too many times with him. With Gael it's so difficult to watch because you know his upside ceiling could be so big but he just goes away and doesn't even try."

Fellow French seed Simon went down to Ivo Karlovic, who sent down 35 aces in a 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 victory.

Rain had delayed play during the day at the ATP 1000 hard-court event.

The only other seed in action on Monday was David Goffin, the Belgian eventually finding his rhythm to get past Lu Yen-hsun 5-7 6-3 6-4.

The retiring Mardy Fish enjoyed his first ATP singles win since August 2013, beating Serbian Viktor Troicki 6-2 6-2.

There were wins for Australians Bernard Tomic and Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Tomic eased past Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4 6-3 and Kokkinakis, who was embroiled in Nick Kyrgios' sledge controversy, overcame an ailing Fabio Fognini 4-6 6-2 6-3.

Kokkinakis could face good friend Kyrgios in the second round.

Lucky loser Benoit Paire got past Gilles Muller 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (8-6), Thomaz Bellucci overcame fellow left-hander Jiri Vesely 7-6 (7-5) 6-2, Joao Sousa beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 and Vasek Pospisil was too good for Denis Kudla 6-4 6-3.

Jack Sock brushed past Bjorn Fratangelo 6-1 6-2, Roberto Bautista Agut claimed a 6-3 6-4 win over Pablo Cuevas and Andreas Seppi was a 6-3 6-3 winner over Adrian Mannarino.

Wildcard Jared Donaldson is on the verge of a first-round victory, leading Nicolas Mahut 7-5 6-7 (2-7) 4-1 before rain halted play.
