Usain Bolt breaks Michael Johnson's world record in 200m

Usain Bolt broke Michael Johnson's 200m world record with a sensational 19.30 secs to win the Olympic gold medal in Beijing 2008

On this day in 2008, Usain Bolt achieved the seemingly impossible and broken Michael Johnson's 'unbreakable' 200m world record with a sensational 19.30 secs to win the Olympic gold medal in Beijing.

In so doing he became the first man to achieve the Olympic double since Carl Lewis in 1984, but became the first man to break the world record in both 100m and 200m.

Bolt started in lane five for that race and powered around the bend to break the record.

Michael Johnson was up in the stands and was seen smiling and giving Bolt the thumbs up.

"Unbelievable, this is a ridiculous race," Michael Johnson said.

"This bend is unbelievable, noone has ever ran a bend life that and probably will never run a bend like that. Look at the gap he has on other athletes, they are running 19 seconds as well, that is how great Usian Bolt.

Speaking after the win, Bolt said he never expected to break the record as he was tired before the race.

"Tonight I can definitely say I did not expect it because I was a little bit tired," he said.

"I felt good later and I said 'let's try' because people were already looking up to this and I decided just to try, now I;m really tired."
