Jordan Spieth expects to bounce back at The Barclays after what he described as the worst round he has played in years.

In his first round as the world number one, the American produced a four-over 74 to sit tied for 95th at the FedEx Cup play-offs opener.

Spieth remains confident he can respond to the poor round, which included three birdies, five bogeys and a double-bogey.

"[It] won't set me back much. I'm just very frustrated immediately after the round," he told a news conference.

"After the tee shots, this is the worst round I've played in years, for hitting that many fairways. I'll just take it at that, that it's just a fluke.

"Typically make more than [three birdies], so I know they will be there tomorrow. I just need to limit the mistakes."

Spieth said the Plainfield Country Club course did not suit his game and he was surprised by his slow start.

Americans Bubba Watson, Tony Finau and Spencer Levin and Colombian Camilo Villegas lead the tournament at five under.

"It was a very off day. A little bit of rust with wedges combined with some poor decision making and it just came out of nowhere," Spieth said.

"Normally when I'm running that good, it doesn't turn like that. So it was really a very unique round for this year."
