Wales hooker Emyr Phillips will miss the Six Nations after undergoing surgery on a shoulder injury sustained while playing for Scarlets.
Phillips had been expected to be part of Warren Gatland's plans for the tournament, that sees Wales begin their campaign against England.
However, he has been ruled out after dislocating his right shoulder during a Pro12 clash with Ospreys on December 27 " a game they lost 17-16.
Scarlets confirmed on Wednesday that the 27-year-old will have surgery on January 2 to rectify the problem.
He will be sidelined for up to 12 weeks, meaning he will not be available for Gatland's squad when the Six Nations begins on February 6.
Wales are looking for a third Six Nations crown in four years, having seen Ireland claim the title in 2014.
