Two-time Olympic gold medallist Sebastian Coe was elected as the IAAF president in China on Wednesday.

The Brit, gold medallist in the 1,500metres at the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games, won the vote ahead of Ukrainian Sergey Bubka.

Of the 207 member federations, 115 voted for Coe and 92 for Bubka.

Coe succeeds Senegalese Lamine Diack, who has led the IAAF for the past 16 years.

"I am deeply honoured that our sport has placed its trust in me," Coe said.

"There is no job I want to do more " nor with greater commitment."

Coe's election comes at a troubling time for the governing body, which has been embroiled in doping allegations ahead of the 2015 World Championships.

The former runner and politician was the London 2012 chairman and the first chairman of the FIFA ethics committee.

Coe was appointed vice-president of the IAAF in 2007 and is the British Olympic Association chairman.
