Sabine Lisicki impressively dispatched of last year's Rogers Cup runner-up Venus Williams in a rain-hit Toronto on Monday.

The German powered past Williams 6-0 6-3 in one of just two completed first-round matches in Toronto.

Williams, the 14th seed, proved no match for the hard-hitting German, who broke serve five times in her 66-minute win.

Rain ensured only one other match finished, with Flavia Pennetta breezing past Canadian wildcard Gabriela Dabrowski 6-4 6-1.

Several matches had started before the weather intervened.

Carla Suarez Navarro and Alize Cornet were locked in a battle, with the former taking the second set 7-6 (7-2) after dropping the first 6-3.

German Carina Witthoft took the first set against Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, but is a break down at 4-2 in the second.

Kristina Mladenovic and Sara Errani played just two games " locked at 1-1 " while Lesia Tsurenko led Yanina Wickmayer 3-2 on serve when rain hit.
