World number 16 Hideki Matsuyama has added his name to the growing list of golfers skipping the Olympics.

The 24-year-old from Japan joins the likes of Jason Day and Rory McIlroy in opting against heading to Rio de Janeiro for the Games.

Matsuyama, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, cited the Zika virus as his reason for withdrawing.

"Although I am excited that golf is returning to the Olympics and I realise that my potential success would help grow the game in Japan, I have come to the conclusion that I cannot put myself or my team member's health at risk," Matsuyama said in a statement, via the Golf Channel.

"I have been getting information from all the concerned parties as well as my doctors about the situation in Rio, but I cannot be 100 per cent sure about my safety, and my team's safety, from the Zika virus.

"Additionally, my body has a tendency to react strongly to insect bites. Therefore, I made a heart-wrenching decision not to participate in the Olympics this year."

Adam Scott, Branden Grace and Graeme McDowell are among others to withdraw from the event, due to be played August 11-14.
