Rio 2016 Olympic Games Thompson cruises, Phelps wins more gold

Michael Phelps, Elaine Thompson and Monica Puig were among the gold medallists at the Rio Olympics.

- Elaine Thompson took out the women's 100 metres in convincing fashion at the Rio Olympics on Saturday.
- While that was the Jamaican's first Games medal, Michael Phelps won his 23rd gold as he helped the United States clinch the men's 4x100m medley relay on the final day of swimming.
- Monica Puig secured Puerto Rico's first ever gold medal, surprisingly winning the women's singles gold. Andy Murray and Juan Martin del Potro are into the men's decider.
- Neymar helped Brazil into the semi-finals of the men's football, scoring in a 2-0 win over Colombia.
- Justin Rose is on the verge of history, holding a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the golf.
- Mo Farah fell during the 10,000m, but he still managed to defend his title in fine fashion.


"Most people don't know where Palau is, so they might Google it now," - Rodman Teltull said after making the heats of the men's 100m.

"I don't even know who Lilly King is. She does swimming and not track and field. I'm not worried about that," - Justin Gatlin responds to King, who questioned the sprinter because of his previous doping suspensions.

"We'll play in anything. If you put mud out there we will play in it. I wish I could use the water as an excuse sometimes but I can't. The water in our pool is fine," - no excuses from United States women's water polo coach Adam Krikorian.

"I am a kid in a candy store. I am hanging with other athletes. Golf just gets in my way," - American Bubba Watson on the Rio Games.


Great Britain's women kept up their record-breaking run to win gold in the team pursuit.

The quartet of Katie Archibald, Laura Trott, Elinor Barker and Joanna Rowsell-Shand broke their own world record with a time of four minutes and 10.236 seconds.

The United States won silver but were never likely to challenge GB, who had also set a world mark in the heats.
