Record-breaking Kyrie Irving sets up win for the Cleveland Cavaliers

Kyrie Irving scored a career-high 55 points in the NBA on Wednesday, inspiring the Cleveland Cavaliers to victory.

Kyrie Irving broke the Quicken Loans Arena points record on Wednesday, as the Cavaliers defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 99-94 in the NBA.

Irving notched 55 points - a personal best for the point guard - as the Cavs stretched their winning streak to eight games and moved to a 27-20 win-loss record for the season.

In a stunning finale, Irving sank a 25-foot three-pointer to put hosts Cleveland ahead with six seconds remaining and then grabbed a rebound when Damian Lillard missed from long range for Portland, which prompted dancing on the sideline from injured team-mate LeBron James.

Irving was fouled and went up the other end to sink two free-throws and clinch the victory, ending just point shy of James' franchise record of 56 but setting the new benchmark of points scored in Cleveland's home stadium.

"It was a total team effort," Irving said in an unsuccessful attempt to share the spotlight.

James disagreed, however, hailing Irving's performance on Twitter: "Just watched live one of if not the one greatest performances by a person and he happen [sic] to be my team-mate/running-mate/brother Kyrie Irving."

Kevin Love (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Timofey Mozgov (12, 10) were also handy contributors for Cleveland, while LaMarcus Aldridge (38, 11) battled hard for the Trail Blazers.

The loss was Portland's sixth in eight games and they sit third in the Western Conference with a 32-14 record, while Cleveland are fifth in the East.

Eastern Conference leaders the Atlanta Hawks won their 17th consecutive game thanks to Paul Millsap's double-double of 28 points and 15 rebounds, as they triumphed 113-102 over the Brooklyn Nets.

Atlanta (38-8) have a seven-game advantage over the Toronto Raptors in the East.

Toronto trumped the Sacramento Kings 119-102, while the third-placed Washington Wizards (31-16) lost 106-98 to the Phoenix Suns.

The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Charlotte Hornets 95-86, the Los Angeles Clippers won 94-89 the Utah Jazz, the New York Knicks overcame the Oklahoma City Thunder 100-92 and the Philadelphia 76ers trumped the Detroit Pistons 89-69.

In other results, the Houston Rockets won 99-94 over the Dallas Mavericks, the Minnesota Timberwolves cruised past the Boston Celtics 110-98 and the Denver Nuggets defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 93-85.
