ODI Series Patel replaces injured Craig for New Zealand India

New Zealand have called up Jeetan Patel for the remaining two Tests with India following Mark Craig's side strain.

Mark Craig will play no further part in New Zealand's Test series with India after injuring his left side during the opening match in Kanpur, with veteran Jeetan Patel called up in his place.

The 29-year-old was injured during the second innings of the first Test, limiting his involvement as the Black Caps fell to a 197-run defeat.

Craig was able to bat through the pain but he will now return to New Zealand to undergo rehabilitation, ruling him out of the remaining two Tests.

"We're really disappointed for Mark, knowing the work he's put in to prepare for this series," said head coach Mike Hesson.

"He started well with the ball in the first innings, before developing the side."

Patel will replace Craig in Kane Williamson's squad with immediate effect, the 36-year-old having topped the wicket-taking charts in the County Championship for Warwickshire this season with 69 scalps in 16 matches.

"Jeetan is up to speed from a bowling load perspective having recently completed a successful county season," Hesson added.

"He will be ready for the rigours of Test cricket.

"He'll also add invaluable experience to our young spin group."

Patel's last Test cap came in January 2013 during New Zealand's tour of South Africa, he has taken 52 wickets at 48.46 in his 19 appearances.
