Tries from Sam Thaiday and Lachlan Maranta proved crucial as Brisbane Broncos ground out a win against St George Illawarra Dragons.
Brisbane Broncos got back to winning ways with a 12-8 victory over St George Illawarra Dragons at WIN Stadium, earning two important NRL points.
The Broncos went to Wollongong on the back of a 32-16 loss to the lowly Sydney Roosters – their fourth defeat in their last five outings – but ground out a narrow win over another struggling side.
Corey Parker and Gareth Widdop exchanged penalties before Sam Thaiday – back from a two-week suspension for his lifting tackle on New South Wales Blues captain Paul Gallen in the second match of the State of Origin series – latched onto Anthony Milford's grubber kick for the first try.
Lachlan Maranta touched down in the corner to extend Brisbane's lead after half-time, but Dragons captain Widdop hit back in the 76th minute to set up a tense finale.
Widdop added the extras to put the difference between the two sides at four points, and the Broncos managed to hold on until the buzzer to consolidate sixth position.
The Dragons have now lost five in a row with their hopes of making the top eight continue to slip away as they sit 12th.
