Marty McKenzie kicked the match-winning conversion as Taranaki snatched a 31-30 victory against Tasman on Thursday.
Tasman only had to kick the ball in to touch to claim the win after the siren had gone but instead opted to push for a four-try bonus point.
But they were left reeling as Taranaki winger Waisake Naholo ran virtually the length of the field to score a try and give McKenzie his moment of glory.
The win had looked beyond Taranaki when two controversial decisions went against them midway through the second half.
Firstly, Tasman were given a handy penalty that Marty Banks slotted despite their lock Joe Wheeler being lucky to stay on the pitch and escape any punishment after stomping on a Taranaki player.
Then halfback Jimmy Cowan was awarded a try even though he looked to have lost the ball over the line.
However, Taranaki recovered from a 30-24 deficit in the closing stages to claim an unlikely victory.
