New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill called on his team to put on a "complete game" and win the one-day international series against South Africa.

The Black Caps head to Durban full of confidence after an eight-wicket win in the second ODI saw them level the series at 1-1 on Sunday.

With their bowlers dismissing the hosts for 204, Guptill delivered in the chase - scoring an unbeaten 103 to guide them to victory with 33 balls to spare.

Guptill said his team needed to produce their best if they were to secure the series on Wednesday.

"We want to win it," he said.

"If we can try and put aspects of both games together and play the complete game it's going to be a pretty good game for us, I think.

"We're going to have to be on our toes again. It's going to be a completely different wicket to what we've had here today so it's going to be a matter of adapting very quickly to the conditions and making sure that we're ready to go."

Hashim Amla's century had led South Africa to a series-opening win, while Adam Milne leads all wicket-takers with four in two games.

South Africa all-rounder Farhaan Behardien, who top-scored with 70 in the second ODI, said his team were ready for a scrap.

"We desperately wanted to win today's game just to wrap up the series 2-0 and go to Durban confident," he said.

"We need to try and build some momentum before going to India, which will be tough, and before the English come over.

"We're bitterly disappointed today. I don't think anything will change, I think we'll try and play the best game we can play, we've been a bit off par and that's evident to see. I don't need to reiterate that.

"We go to Durban scrapping for a series. We need to come to the party and bring our A game come Wednesday."
