IK Enemkpali, the linebacker released by the New York Jets on Tuesday for breaking quarterback Geno Smith's jaw, will head to the Buffalo Bills for a second chance with the coach who drafted him.

The Bills claimed Enemkpali off waivers on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the Jets cut him.

After his release, the common belief was Enemkpali would be hard-pressed to find another NFL job.

But Bills coach Rex Ryan, formerly of the Jets and the man who drafted the linebacker in the sixth round of the 2014 draft, and is seemingly the coach most familiar with his ability.

Enemkpali faces a possible fine or suspension by the NFL under its personal conduct policy should he make the Bills roster.

The league is reviewing the incident between Enemkpali and Smith, which took place inside the Jets locker room following practice on Tuesday.

A dispute over $600 reportedly was what caused Enemkpali to punch Smith, breaking his jaw.

He could also face criminal charges, if Smith decides to pursue them.

Smith will miss six to 10 weeks with the injury.

Enemkpali, 24, played little during his rookie season, appearing in six games.

But Ryan and the Bills presumably sought to add some punch to their thin linebacking corps, and Enemkpali was deemed worthy of a shot.

"IK made a mistake but he's not a bad guy," Ryan told reporters following Wednesday's practice.

"Being around him for a year, I'm very confident he'll be just fine.

"IK wouldn't be here if we didn't think he could be successful on the football field and in our community."
