IK Enemkpali apologised for his locker-room punch on Geno Smith, having broken the New York Jets' quarterback's jaw.
Former New York Jets defensive end IK Enemkpali apologised for breaking quarterback Geno Smith's jaw on Tuesday.
Enemkpali was immediately released from the Jets after his punch broke Smith's jaw in two places.
Smith will require surgery and will be out for 6-10 weeks.
"I apologise to the Jets organisation, coaches, teammates and fans," Enemkpali's statement read.
"Geno and I let our frustration get the best of us, but I should have just walked away from the situation.
"I deeply regret and apologise for my actions. It was never my intention to harm anyone. I appreciate the opportunity I had with the Jets."
Jets coach Todd Bowles called the incident "very childish that sixth graders could have talked about".
Ryan Fitzpatrick is listed behind Smith and will likely take over quarterback duties for the Jets' first pre-season game against the Detroit Lions on Thursday.
