United States Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III believes the next generation of American golfers are "playing very, very well".

With just over a year until the 2016 Ryder Cup, Love III is already starting to build a shortlist in preparation for his four captain's picks and he has a warning for any American veterans hoping for another shot at golf's most famous team trophy - the next generation is ready.

"Very exciting. We have a lot of new guys playing very, very well. And even some veterans, like Jim Furyk, consistently playing very well," Love III said on Tuesday.

"I have guys that have played a few Ryder Cups telling me they want to be on a winning Ryder Cup team next year. So we have got guys with experience that are excited about it, young guys that haven't played that are on a roll and want to make a team. It's a very exciting time for American golf."

World number two Jordan Spieth is leading the charge for USA's next generation having won both the Masters and the U.S. Open this year, with the 22-year-old almost certain to play in just his second Ryder Cup next year.

With 26-year-old Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed (25), Brooks Koepka (25) and Robert Streb (28) also in and around the top eight in USA's Ryder Cup rankings, which come with an automatic berth in Love III's squad, the American troupe could have a number of younger faces in it next year.

Love III plans to use this year's Presidents Cup between USA and the Internationals as a test run for next year's tournament at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota.

"If I was [USA Presidents Cup captain] Jay Haas, I'd be really excited, because he's got a good line-up getting ready for Korea. And I'm his assistant over there, so I'll get to watch those guys play," the 51-year-old said.

"And hopefully we'll have a lot of the same guys next year. It's exciting. They're playing well. I'm watching a lot more golf on TV. Watching these guys play has been a lot of fun."
