French Open Wawrinka ready for Murray battle

Defending French Open champion Stan Wawrinka feels he is finding form at the right time at the French Open.

Third seed Stan Wawrinka knows Andy Murray will provide a stern test in the semi-final as he looks to retain his French Open title.

Having struggled in his opening match at Roland Garros, Wawrinka has rarely looked troubled since and that continued on Wednesday as he brushed aside Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-2 6-1 7-6 (9-7).

Wawrinka's trademark backhand worked superbly throughout the quarter-final, his control on proceedings so strong that Ramos-Vinolas struggled to make an impact.

The Spaniard showed some fight in the third, but it was too little too late as Wawrinka booked a meeting with Murray - a man he has not met in a grand slam since 2013.

"We haven't played each other much in the last few years, on clay it's been a long time," he said.

"He's improved a lot. He's playing so well, especially if you look at this year. He won Rome, reached the final in Madrid and semi-final in Monaco.

"It's going to be an interesting match, for sure. We normally have some good battles, so I'm quite happy to play him. I think it's going to be a great challenge and a great semi-final."

And Wawrinka is confident he can get the better of the world number two, the Swiss feeling his form has continued to improve throughout the tournament.

He added: "I'm really, really happy to play again another semi-final here, especially seeing the way I'm playing, the way I'm feeling. It's a great feeling.

"Today it was a really good match. I play some really good tennis. I was really focused out there. I am moving well.

"I'm really happy with what I'm doing so far, and being in semi-final again, it's something really good for me."
