Sam Stosur booked a fourth French Open semi-final of her career courtesy of a 6-4 7-6 (8-6) victory over Tsvetana Pironkova on Wednesday.

The Australian reached the last four in Paris in 2009, 2010 and 2012, and she added 2016 to that list with an assured display on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Pironkova had already knocked out three seeds in this year's draw - Agnieszka Radwanska, Sara Errani and Sloane Stephens - but Stosur was not going to be added to that list.

After a fairly comfortable opening set Stosur was made to battle, coming from 5-1 down in the tie-break to progress.

Stosur will be meet fourth seed Garbine Muguruza in the last four after she came past Shelby Rogers 7-5 6-3 in Wednesday's other quarter-final.

Muguruza found herself under pressure early on as Rogers broke in the opener, but she finished strong and took the final four games to move ahead.

She extended that run to seven at the start of the second, before serving out to love to reach her second grand slam semi-final and first at Roland Garros having lost in the quarter-finals in 2014 and 2015.
