Max Scherzer starred as the Detroit Tigers joined Kansas City Royals atop the American League Central division on Tuesday.
Scherzer allowed one run on seven hits and struck out six batters to lead the Tigers to a 4-2 win over the Royals in MLB action.
With the bases loaded, Scherzer walked Gordon and the retired the next two batters in a dominant performance as he improved to 16-5.
JD Martinez and Rajai Davis both homered for the Tigers, who are now tied with the Royals in AL Central after back-to-back wins against the Kansas City franchise.
"We have the talent in this clubhouse to get it done," said Scherzer.
"We can play with anybody in baseball and we can beat anybody in baseball - when we play our A-game. I thought we played our A-game tonight."
The Los Angeles Angels continued their red-hot form, defeating the lowly Texas Rangers 9-3.
Collin Cowgill had three RBIs, while Kole Calhoun hit his 15th home run as the Angels extended their winning streak to six games.
The Angels - top of the AL West - are eight games clear of the Oakland Athletics, who routed the Chicago White Sox 11-2.
Jose Bautista produced the goods as the in-form Toronto Blue Jays crushed the Chicago Cubs 9-2.
Bautista hit a go-ahead, three-run double in the seventh inning to inspire Toronto to a third consecutive win.
