Derek Jeter was destined to be a New York Yankee says scout

The scout who brought Derek Jeter to the New York Yankees knew he had a star on his hands right from the off.

Jeter is set to call time on a glittering 19-year career with the Yankees when he takes the field against their fierce rivals the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park this weekend.

The 40-year-old shortstop counts five World Series' on his impressive resume and is a 14-time MLB All Star.

Dick Groch, who scouted Jeter as a 17-year-old, had no doubt that he had unearthed a "special" talent.

"Thirty seconds after I walked into [see Jeter play], that was the first thing I said, 'This is special'," Groch told Perform. "Each observation that followed, it would just build - the word special would become larger and larger.

"What I did - I eventually got to the point of saying to myself that there are five tools and those tools are above average. And he's a 17-year-old with five above-average tools and he has a charisma and a character and some intangibles that are not present in a number of people.

"So he has the ability to be a Yankee and to survive in that environment."

Groch stated that Jeter's maturity beyond his years and obvious passion for the Yankees franchise were two of the characteristics he noticed straight away.

He added: "[I noticed] the maturity, the smile on his face. He was so far advanced in terms of his character, not only his conversations with me, but also my observations of his inter-relationships with his parents, his inter-relationships with his coaching staff, players on the team.

"He had a constant smile on his face, there were no ups and downs, he was consistent.

"That stability and consistency is a necessary quantity to survive, particularly in New York. Because in New York, he's going to have to play in the toughest venue in all of sport and I just felt that he was so mature and so far ahead character-wise than the kids I've had an opportunity to scout.

"In terms of being a Yankee, I was sold on having the right player and there were some other reasons for that. Derek had spent a lot of time with his grandmother in New Jersey, he worshipped the New York Yankees.

"At a very young age, he had made the statement that when he grows up he's going to be shortstop for the New York Yankees and that attitude permeated the direction of Derek Jeter and that's why I felt we could sign him.

"And he was going to be a sign-able player because he wanted to play professional baseball and more than that, he wanted to be a New York Yankee."
