Carl Haas, founder of one of United States' most famous motorsport teams, passed away age 86 following a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

A statement on Carl Haas Automobile Imports' website revealed the legendary team owner passed away on Wednesday, June 29.

"Carl Haas' incredible journey came to a peaceful end on June 29, 2016, at his home that he loved, surrounded by family," the statement read.

Haas, who began as a race driver in the 1950s, shot to fame three decades later after teaming up with famed American actor Paul Newman, who passed away in 2008, in a partnership that delivered eight Champ Car drivers' championships.

The team merger was an almost immediate success, with the Newman/Haas combination claiming the title with Mario Andretti in only its second year in 1984.

Mario's son, Michael, Nigel Mansell, Cristiano da Matta and Sebastien Bourdais were all others to rack up championships with the outfit.

"RIP Carl Haas. My 12 seasons w/you were victorious, intense, fun. All of it. Now Newman/Haas back together in heaven," Mario Andretti wrote via Twitter.

Haas also ran teams in Formula 5000, Can-Am, Super Vee and NASCAR.
