Australia defeated Lithuania 82-75 on day four of the FIBA World Cup, while tournament favourites United States saw off New Zealand.

Defeat for world number four side Lithuania came as something of a shock, as they were usurped at the top of Group D by their conquerors in Gran Canaria on Tuesday.

Australia reached half-time 47-28 in front, before a strong third quarter from Lithuania reduced the deficit to six points.

Although Renaldas Seibutis top-scored with 21 points, Lithuania were unable to claw their way back as they fell to a first defeat of the finals, and Australia head coach Andre Lemanis was delighted with his side's performance.

"I thought we came out as planned - very aggressive and disruptive defensively," he said.

"Our guys did a great job forcing some turnovers and getting a flow for us going early - we forced them into 22 turnovers and that ignited some of our offence.

"I was pleased with the way we managed [the game]. They were always going to make a run and we did a good job of playing out the game, finding a way to win."

In Group C, USA made it three wins out of three thanks to a comfortable 98-71 success over New Zealand, with Anthony Davis particularly impressive for the victors as he racked up 21 points.

Elsewhere in that pool, Ukraine were indebted to 19 points from Olexandr Mishula for their 64-58 win over Turkey, and Dominican Republic saw off Finland 74-68.

Mexico earned their first success of the finals with a 79-55 triumph against Angola, and centre Gustavo Ayon, who netted 17 points, was understandably relieved.

"I'm very happy to win this game, it was a team effort and we were together every moment of the game," he said.

In the day's other fixture, Slovenia's Goran Dragic claimed 22 points to help his country overcome South Korea 89-72.
