Arizona Cardinals Bruce Arians draws hard line after Jonathan Dwyer charges

Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians showed little sympathy for his running back Jonathan Dwyer, who is facing aggravated assault charges.

Speaking on Thursday following the deactivation of Dwyer, Arians said if the 25-year-old is found guilty, he would be permanently cut from the Cardinals' roster.

Dwyer will not be available for the remainder of the 2014 season, but will still be paid his annual salary of $730,000.

Arians said the course of justice will decide Dwyer's future at the Cardinals.

"We take that [charge] extremely seriously and we will let due process take care of itself but we made immediate action as a football team to de-activate him and today he was place on NFI [non-football injury] and it will allow the court system to take care of what is true and is not true and up until he is exonerated he will not be a member of this football team," Arians said.

"If and when he is exonerated I will gladly take him back."

Arians said in light of recent abuse allegations made towards NFL players Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, heavy penalties were required to banish the growing instances.

"I think they have been going on for a long time but finally people are becoming aware of it and doing something about it and it is uncalled for and I think anyone who touches a woman or child in my opinion needs to go to jail for a long time," he said.

Arians insisted the charges would not distract his charges, ahead of their clash with the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

"We move on, it is not a distraction and will not be a distraction," he said.

"Our team has kind of got used to what everybody else would consider a distraction and we get ready for a huge football game this Sunday."
