2015 Australian Open Maria Sharapova sweeps past Zarina Diyas

Maria Sharapova avoided another scare as she cruised past Zarina Diyas in the Australian Open third round on Friday.

Maria Sharapova put her second-round close call behind her to wipe the floor with Zarina Diyas at the Australian Open on Friday.

Sharapova had to save match points against qualifier Alexandra Panova, but she barely gave 31st seed Diyas a sniff in the third-round contest as she coasted to a 6-1 6-1 triumph in Rod Laver Arena.

The second seed got off to a fast start against Panova and repeated that against Diyas, but on this occasion the Russian backed it up with an equally dominant second set to progress in 61 minutes.

At 3-0 and 30-0 down, Diyas shrugged her shoulders in the direction of her players' box. She simply had no answer to Sharapova's power and ability to hit winners at will.

Sharapova fittingly bookended the first set with forehand winners - both came returning Diyas' serve - and she tallied eight in seven games.

After 14 winners in the first set in total, and a convincing service performance, Sharapova's start to the second set would be crucial given she was in the same position against Panova in round two.

If Sharapova was concerned about a repeat performance, she showed it in the first game as she fell 0-40 behind, with Diyas breaking at the third time of asking.

But she dispelled any chance of a comeback from the Kazakh, reeling off the next six games with minimal fuss - producing an ace on match point to seal her progression.
