Dominika Cibulkova acknowledged her aggression was flawless on Monday, as she downed two-time champion Victoria Azarenka at the Australian Open.
The 11th seed had never beaten Azarenka on hard courts in six previous attempts but prevailed 6-2 3-6 6-3 in two hours and 10 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.
The 2014 finalist in Melbourne credited her seemingly unlimited aggression - Cibulkova hit 21 winners in a blistering first set - as the key to downing the former world number one.
"The first set, the way I played... [I made] no mistakes. I was going for my shots and I was just doing the right things," Cibulkova said.
"I was really putting her under so much pressure. And then she stepped up in the second set much more. She started to serve better and return better.
"So she kept me...more behind the baseline.
"Then in the third set I just knew I have to go for it more than [one] hundred percent.
"I knew I have to be much more aggressive and just stay there and to go for my shots."
And that is exactly what she did - Cibulkova hit 44 winners for the match, as she arrested a break deficit in the deciding set to avoid another defeat at the hands of the Belarusian.
In Miami in 2012, Cibulkova blew a 6-1 4-0 lead against Azarenka - and she said such a defeat inspired her to finish the job this time around.
"I lost to her a few times before that I was a set up and maybe 5-2 or 5-3 up in the second set and I didn't manage to finish it," Cibulkova conceded.
"First time I finally beat her it was two years ago at Roland Garros on clay.
"So that gave me really a lot of confidence.
"Today I was not thinking about the score, I was just going for it. When I was up I was going for it even more."
Azarenka, who battled foot injuries during an interrupted 2014 season, said her run to the second week at Melbourne Park was a step forward.
"I take it as a progress. I think there are a lot of the positive things to take from here. It's a good start," she said.
"There was some good quality of tennis today, even though the result is not the one that I wanted and not what I was looking for.
"But I need to be realistic a little bit and keep working hard and try to sharpen my game.
"I need to be more consistent and I need to be able to take my opportunities when I have them.
"But overall, I can be pretty happy. But I'm such a perfectionist that I don't want to be satisfied."
