The federal government is set to reward Team Nigerias medal winners at the
Minister of Sports Solomon Dalung revealed the monetary rewards to the 90 athletes that will represent Nigeria at the 21st Commonwealth Games.
The 90 athletes that will represent Nigeria at the games will take part in nine sports across various events at the games.
A total of 37 athletes will take part in several athletics events, there are 12 basketball players to the games, also 12 wrestlers, the table tennis team are a total of five, four weightlifters and two para-athletes.
Dalung revealed the financial reward for the athletes and also stated that they have the president’s support going into the games.
He said, “I see you are all in high spirits and it shows that you have prepared for the competition. The President has sent his special greetings to inspire you. It is the President’s wish, that at the end of our sojourn here, the name of Nigeria will be great.”
Dalung also stated that the President is expecting clean medals and that the athlete should not do anything to bring the country’s name to disrepute while clearly emphasizing that the ministry will not support nor tolerate unclean athletes.
He said, “Mr. President also said that he would be very happy to receive clean medals even if they’re of the lowest cadre than 10 tainted medals.”
At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Team Nigeria was placed 8th at the end of the Games with a total medal count of 11 Gold medals, 11 Silver Medals, and 14 bronze medals.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast Australia runs from Wednesday, April 4 till Sunday, April 15.
