Former Barcelona goalkeeper announces retirement from football

Valdes announced his decision to retire on social media on New Year's Day.

Valdes announced his decision to retire on social media on New Year's Day as the 35-year-old revealed he now wants to focus on his family.

He subsequently deleted all of his social media accounts (Twitter and Instagram).

Valdes enjoyed a stellar career at national team level winning the world cup with Spain, as well as multiple league and Champions League successes at Barcelona but has been without a club after leaving Middlesbrough in May last year.

Unsuccessful stints

Valdes also had unsuccessful spells at Standard Liege and Manchester United but regardless, boasts an amazing trophy cabinet of six La Liga and Supercopa De Espana titles, three Champions League titles, two Copa Del Rey, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cups, in his 12 years at Barcelona.

And on the international scene, he was part of Spain's world cup triumph in 2010 as well as winning the European championship in 2012.

Valdes is a man of his word after he announced in 2015 that he would delete his social media accounts once his playing days came to an end to focus on his family.

He told RAC1: "When the light goes out someday, then it will go out and I'll be with my children, teaching them about life.

"But I hope that when the light does go out, it will be hard to find me."
