Manchester United were stunned at home by Sevilla and Twitter didn't show them any mercy.
After a goalless draw in the first leg in Spain, United were stunned at home 2-1 and Twitter users had no mercy for them.
Manchester United fans were not having it with Mourinho, vilifying him following the heartbreaking loss. They called their manager out for his rigid set-up, starting with Marouane Fellaini and Nemanja Matic in midfield.
The decision to start Fellaini over Paul Pogba was very puzzling to many as the Belgian endured a very ineffective evening.
“Mourinho at United is a waste of everyone’s time,” Miguel Delaney, a journalist tweeted.
“I'm not even angry, just disappointed. Could see that coming from a mile off today. And we didn't even try to change it until it was too late,” another user wrote.
“Mourinho has to take the blame for this one! Tactics, selection, substitutions, all wrong tonight.”
Despite some improvements on the pitch this season, Mourinho’s Manchester United have divided opinions. While some believe they have been better than in recent years, many others are of the opinion that the Portuguese is not the man to take Manchester United back to their glory days.
“Mourinho FAILED to attack a team who lost 5-1 to Eibar, 2-5 to Real Betis & almost killed by Real Madrid & A.Madrid , lost 5-0 & 5-1 to them respectively. Man Utd had just 4 shots on target in 180 minutes. That's not pragmatism, that's failure,” Twitter user Pooja wrote.
“The strangest thing this season was that United extended Mourinho’s contract before he’d really achieved anything. Oh and giving Ibrahimovic a new deal while he was injured,” Daily Telegraph writer Matt Law wrote in Twitter.
“Manchester United right now is a shambles, and it's been coming for a while. Against Sevilla however, this was the tipping point for Jose Mourinho as manager. He is not getting the most out of his best players, & he has set them up for failure. That's exactly what's happened,” another respected journalist Adam Joseph wrote.
Since his move from Arsenal in January, Sanchez has not been electrifying as expected, against Sevilla, he lost the ball 42 times to the rage of Manchester United and delight of rival supporters.
The 29-year was heavily criticised by Manchester United, a far cry from the celebrations when he signed in January. Rivals fans were also on hand to remind them of the enthusiasm when he signed.
“Sanchez is the latest in a long line of players who thought he was better than Arsenal and left. When he retires and looks back on his career, the best football he ever played will have been under Wenger for Arsenal. Shame he turned out to be such a nob,” an Arsenal fan wrote, rubbing it in the face of Manchester United supporters.
“Alexis Sanchez sold his soul for £490k a week. He won’t be remembered as a legend at either club and overall, he’s had a nothing career,” another Arsenal fan wrote.
The game generated much reactions on Twitter as ‘Sevilla’, ‘Mourinho’, ‘Ben Yedder’, ‘Pogba’ ‘Manchester United’, ‘Man Utd’ and ‘De Gea’ are the dominating trending items on the social media platform.
