Denmark has been quite a good hunting ground for players of Nigerian extraction down the years.

Since its inception in 1991, the Danish Superliga has welcomed foreign players to compete in their league. It is the highest football league in Denmark, currently contested by 12 teams yearly, with two teams relegated. It is not one of the most popular or glamorous leagues in Europe, but it has definitely attracted a significant number of players from all over the world. The Danish Superliga has also served as a stepping stone for many players who want to play in the top five European leagues.

Many Nigerian footballers have played in the Danish Superliga and made a notable impact during their time there. Nigerian football club, FC Ebedei serves as the African football academy of Danish Superliga club FC Midtjylland. Here are the top five Nigerian footballers who played in Denmark.

1. Uche Okechukwu

The defensive stalwart of the Super Eagles was instrumental in their African Cup of Nations and Olympic gold medal victories in 1994, and 1996 respectively. Uche is often remembered and also honored as the foreign player, who played in Turkey for the longest period of time: 13 years.

However, he also had a tremendous impact in Denmark. The defender moved abroad to join Danish club Brøndby in July 1990. Okechukwu was a vital part of the Brøndby team that won the 1990 and 1991 Danish championship and was also a key member of the squad that reached the semifinals of the 1990/91 UEFA Cup.

2. Adigun Salami

Adigun Salami played for Danish club Midtjylland from 2006 to 2012, making over a hundred appearances for the club. After leaving Midtjylland in 2012. He joined SønderjyskE on a free transfer, but during his time there he struggled with persistent injuries. He finally retired at Middelfart in the Danish 2nd Division in 2018.

3. Peter Utaka

Peter Utaka is the younger brother of the more famous Nigerian footballer John Utaka. Peter had a really impressive spell in Denmark. Utaka moved to Danish side Odense Boldklub in 2008 and scored 30 goals in 60 league appearances for them. In the 2009/10 Danish Superliga season, he notched 18 goals in 33 matches, the first time in five years an Odense Boldklub player was the top scorer in the league.

4. Abdul Sule

Abdul Sule is the Nigerian with the most appearances in the Danish Superliga. He played for four different Danish clubs, made over 200 appearances, and scored 63 league goals. He first moved to Danish side Herning Fremad in 1997, and three years later, he secured a move to Akademisk Boldklub for a then-Danish record nine million DKK. He is currently a player agent.

5. Jude Nworuh

Like Paul Onuachu, Jude Nworuh joined Midtjylland from Nigerian side FC Ebedei in 2008. He went on to make 88 league appearances for them, scoring 17 goals. He moved to Fredericia on loan in 2010 and was finally signed permanently by AC Horsens in 2012. He played for all three Danish clubs and scored a considerable number of goals with each of them.
