AWCON 1-1 draw with Ghana confirms Nigeria are not favourites anymore

The draw against Ghana confirms Nigeria are not the hot favourites many thought them to be.

Having won seven titles (nine if you include the 1991 and 1995 editions which were played in a FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers' format), that victory over Mali was another result that complimented popular predictions that the Super Falcons would win the title again.

It should, however, be noted that the Super Falcons did not arrive Cameroon in the best form and there were fears among Nigerian football enthusiasts that the Falcons were not exactly hot favourites.

They failed to qualify for Rio 2016 Olympic Games as they were knocked out by Equatorial Guinea and also could not win any medal at 2015 All Africa Games.

Although the 6-0 win brought back the belief, the Super Falcons were however held to a 1-1 draw by Ghana in their second Group B game.

Tournament’s leading scorer, Asisat Oshoala opened scoring in the 19th minute to score her fifth of the tournament.

The Super Falcons dominated the first half but missed several chances before the Black Queens levelled just two minutes before halftime.

Ugo Njoku was adjudged to have fouled a Ghanaian player in the penalty box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Elizabeth Addo stepped up to calmly score from the penalty spot.

The Black Queens of Ghana were the better side in the second half in a very tight game.

Despite the draw, the Super Falcons are still on top of Group B albeit on goal difference and will be looking to get all three points when they play Kenya on Saturday, November 26.

The draw against Ghana confirms Nigeria are not the hot favourites many thought them to be.

With Ghana getting stronger and Cameroon with the home support, the Super Falcons might have to work twice as hard to retain the title.
