Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Stewart has lauded Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey for his strong performance during the UEFA Europa League final.

Bassey started at centre-back for Rangers as they faced Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Europa League final at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in Seville.

Despite the Super Eagles defender's impressive performance for the Scottish giants, Rangers lost to Frankfurt 5-4 on penalties after playing a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes of football.

In the aftermath of the final in Spain, Stewart took to his personal Twitter page to hail Bassey for his excellent performance on the night.

The former Manchester United and Hibernian player described Bassey as 'absolutely unbelievable' in his praise of the 22-year-old on Wednesday night.

Stewart tweeted: “Calvin Bassey is absolutely unbelievable. Can’t quite believe how good he has been the second half of the season.”

Now a Scottish Member of Parliament, Stewart urged Rangers to do everything they can to keep Bassey at the club this summer even if they would sell other players.

"They must do everything to keep a hold of him. If players must be sold then they can’t let him be one of them. Tremendous player," Stewart continued.

Bassey has two (2) years left on his contract at the Ibrox Stadium, having signed a four-year deal with Rangers when he joined them on a free transfer from Leicester City's U-23 side in July 2020.

Calvin Bassey has been a standout player for Rangers this season with manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst predominantly using him as a centre-back since Steven Gerrard departed instead of his natural left-back position.

The Nigerian international recently won the Rangers' Men's Young Player of the Year Award for his impressive performances for the club during the 2021/22 season.

Bassey played all but one of Rangers' 15 Europa League matches this season, registering one (1) assist on the road to Wednesday's final against Eintracht Frankfurt.
