Victor Osimhen mocks Hellas Verona fans after being reportedly subjected to racist chants

Italian Serie A side Hellas Verona have landed in trouble over alleged racist chants directed at Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen in their last match.

Osimhen was reportedly subjected to racist jeers and chants from the Hellas Verona during the 2022/23 Serie A Matchday 1 fixture between Verona and Napoli at the Marc Antonio Bentegodi on Monday.

Despite the distractions, the Nigerian international was still influential for the Partenopei as Luciano Spalletti's men ran out 5-2 winners.

While Osimhen exacted his revenge on the pitch with a goal and an assist and a cheeky celebration after that, the Italian authorities have also chosen to sanction Hellas Verona.

As reported by forzanapolipress, the Federal Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the racist allegations.

In a press statement signed by Sports Judge Gerardo Mastandrea, assisted by Stefania Ginesio and by the representative of the AIA Carlo Moretti, the South Curve - the part of the Stadium where the chants reportedly emanated from - will be investigated.

The statement read in part: "[Regarding] Hellas Verona-Napoli, the Sports Judge, having read the report of the collaborators of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, considers it necessary that it be investigated, by the same Federal Prosecutor, having heard, if necessary, also the heads of public order, the sub-sectors of the South Curve, where identifiable, from which the first choirs of racial discrimination began against a player of the Napoli Soc. after the realization of a goal."

In the meantime, the Federal Prosecutor's Office fined Hellas Verona a total sum of €15000. A larger chunk of €12,000 is for repeated racist incidents while the South Curve also face a €3,000 fine for throwing objects on the pitch.

"A €12,000 fine to Soc. Hellas Verona for its supporters, during the match, repeatedly chanting insulting choruses of territorial origin towards the supporters of the opposing team.

"A €3,000 fine to Soc. Hellas Verona for its supporters throwing objects onto the playing surface during the match; attenuated exemption pursuant to art. 29, paragraph 1 letter. b) CGS."

Hellas Verona will be in action again on Sunday, August 21 when they travel to the Renato Dall'Ara to face Bologna while Napoli will host newly-promoted Monza on the same day at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples.
