Jansen reveals Calvin Bassey's weak point that Liverpool discovered

Calvin Bassey held his own quite well for Ajax against Liverpool

Popular Ajax Amsterdam insider Freek Jansen has claimed that Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been found out for his weakness in defence.

Jansen believes that Bassey's weak point was discovered by Liverpool in their UEFA Champions League Matchday 2 fixture which Ajax lost by a 2-1 scoreline at Anfield.

Bassey played from start to finish in the match against Liverpool, partnering Jurrien Timber in the centre of defence in the Nigerian's first away game in the Champions League.

Liverpool were the first team to score with Bassey on the pitch for Ajax, a run that went on for five consecutive games including a 4-0 bashing of his former club Rangers on Matchday 1 of the Champions League.

However, while speaking on the Pak Schaal Podcast as reported by ajaxfanatics, Jansen stated that Bassey's unfamiliarity with playing in centre defence will still lead to a lot of 'trial and error' for the time being.

Jansen said: "It will still go a bit with trial and error for Bassey. That can also be explained because that boy has not been standing left central defender for very long. He was still playing left back at Rangers around this time last year.

"Then Van Brockhorst put him in the center of the left. He can absolutely do that. We have seen that often enough, for example at Rangers home. I really thought he was so very good in that place."

Furthermore, Jansen highlighted that Bassey's unfamiliarity with his new role makes him the easy target for opposing players, a tactic that Liverpool discovered and which AZ Alkmaar used in the next match to also grab a 2-1 victory over Ajax.

"Only he now also experiences that he is being put under pressure against Liverpool and AZ. Opponents often choose the least central defender to put pressure on," Jansen explained.

"Then of course they choose Bassey, because Timber is so comfortable with the ball. is a bit like driving a car for Bassey, you just have to do it very often and then it becomes his own."

Bassey has played seven competitive matches in all competitions for Ajax this season, keeping five (5) clean sheets while conceding only four (4) goals in that time.
