Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been touted to be taken under the wing of former Manchester United defender Daley Blind at his new club Ajax Amsterdam.

Bassey completed a summer transfer from Scottish giants Rangers to Ajax on a five-year permanent deal after impressing in the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League.

The Nigerian international has cemented his spot in the Ajax starting XI, featuring alongside Jurrien Timber in central defence with Daley Blind and Devyne Rensch playing in the full-back positions.

Added to his immense qualities as a defender, Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder believes that Calvin Bassey has to understudy former Manchester United player Daley Blind to improve his quality on the ball.

As reported by Ajax life, Schreuder stated that older players like Blind are duty-bound to help young players like Bassey with their positional play and distribution.

The Ajax boss said about Bassey's ball-playing capabilities: “We help him with that and Daley Blind also plays an important role in that. He helps Calvin make the right choices on the field.

"In possession of the ball, but also in terms of choosing position. Older players help younger players. That is how it should be.”

Blind, who has established himself at Ajax, admitted to helping Bassey improve on his qualities while at the Johan Cruyff Arena, also stating that the Nigerian international asks a lot of questions and is eager to learn.

"Calvin asks a lot and is very eager to learn. I help him where I can. He is a cheerful guy with many qualities," Blind stated.

"We talk a lot about how we can support each other on the pitch, especially in terms of positioning.”

Calvin Bassey boasts a 100% league record at Ajax, having kept three consecutive clean sheets in the three league matches he has featured in this season.

The Super Eagles star is set to face his former club Rangers in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, September 7 when Ajax host the Scottish giants at the Johan Cruyff Arena for their 2022/23 Matchday 1 fixture.
