Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder has backed his side to overcome their latest problems after returning to winning ways on Saturday afternoon.
Ajax manager supports revenge after Calvin Bassey's first goal
Calvin Bassey showed his quality against FC Volendam after scoring his first goal for Ajax
Ajax secured a 4-2 away victory over FC Volendam in the Dutch Eredivisie on Saturday, ending a run of four matches without victory in all competitions.
Bassey was also amongst the goalscorers at the Kras Stadion on Saturday afternoon, doubling Ajax's lead in the 39th minute to take the scores to 2-0 at the time.
Ajax get revenge on FC Volendam
Saturday's victory over Volendam took Ajax to 22 points and back to the top of the Eredivisie table momentarily, pending AZ Alkmaar's away fixture with FC Utrecht on Sunday.
Coming off the back of a two-game winless run, Schreuder suggested that the Ajax squad might have been affected by the high number of departures from the club during the summer.
As reported by NL Times, the Ajax manager said: "Remember that seven players have left. And along with that comes ups and downs. Sometimes people don't want to hear that.
"Three weeks ago everything was still great, but we are a team in development. Three weeks ago these guys were playing fantastic together. They deserved a chance for revenge."
Ajax's recent defensive problems reared its head again as the Schreuder-led side conceded two goals after they were 3-0 up to take the match to 3-2 before substitute Davy Klaasen scored in the 96th minute to ensure Volendam did not complete a historical comeback.
We are still afraid of 6-1 defeat to Napoli - Ajax manager
While reacting to this, Schreuder hinted that his team might still be suffering from the 6-1 Champions League defeat to Napoli. However, the Ajax manager stated that he told his players to keep playing as they were even after conceding one goal.
Schreuder said: "There was nothing wrong up until it was 3-0. I even thought we were good in the first half hour of the second half.
"After the 1-3 you see that we don't have much self-confidence. That also has to do with Tuesday's game with Napoli. But then we have to continue to perform our tasks.
"After the 3-1 there is nothing to worry about if everyone continues to do their thing. But we have not done that. We were no longer compact in the final phase. We were way too far apart.”
Bassey and Ajax will be in action again Wednesday, October 12 when they travel to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to take in the return leg of their Champions League group stage match.
