Dolphins, Sharks F.C merge to form new club

The move is part of the state government's move to redevelop the club and re-position if for the success in the coming years.

Sharks FC and Dolphins were funded by the states and the clubs suffered as the government were not able to pay properly manage them financially.

The Rivers United FC is taking up the position of Dolphins FC who narrowly escaped a relegation from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with a 2-2 draw away at Shooting Stars while Sharks were relegated.

The League Management Company (LMC) organisers of the NPFL gave Rivers State Government the permission to merge both clubs.

"Pursuant to the provisions to the article A5.4 of the Framework and Rules of the Nigeria Professional Football League, having duly considered your permission to change the name of the club from 'Dolphins Football Club' to 'Rivers United Football Club',"  the LMC said in a letter sent to the Rivers State Ggovernment.

"We are pleased to convey to you the approval of the League Management Company."
