The United States Women's football team have crashed out of the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

The defending champions lost  4-3 in penalty shootouts to Sweden on Friday, August 12, in Brasilia, denying them of their fourth consecutive gold medal at the Olympics.

The USA, who won last year's World Cup and have the world player of the year in captain Carli Lloyd, have a fearsome Olympic record.

They have won the last three Olympic gold medals and four of the five Olympic tournaments that have been staged, taking silver at Sydney 2000, when they lost the final to Norway 3-2 in extra time.
