The biggest athletes in the world rarely give interviews. When they do, it’s usually in pre-match conferences or post-match interviews. 

Cristiano Ronaldo, however, sat down with renowned British journalist Piers Morgan for an in-depth interview where they discussed a slew of issues including the rape allegations leveled against him by American model Kathyrn Mayorga and how he almost joined Arsenal

These are 10 things he said in the interview. 

1. Embarrassed by the rape accusation

The 34-year-old said he was embarrassed with the rape accusation that was levelled against him. 

"One day I was at home in the living room with my girlfriend and then the news they speak about Cristiano Ronaldo, this and that,” he said. 

"You listen to you kids coming down the stairs and you change the channel because I was embarrassed. I feel embarrassed.

"It makes you feel so bad."

2. How he almost joined Arsenal

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo confirmed that he was close to joining Arsenal before he signed for Manchester United in 2013. 

“It's true. (I came) very close, one step away. Incredible. They're a fantastic club,” Ronaldo said. 

It didn't happen, but I appreciate what they did for me, especially Arsene Wenger

3. Regrets about his dad

This was a topic that brought tears to the eyes of the Juventus star especially after he was shown a video of his late father Dinis Aveiro stating how proud he was of him. 

Aveiro passed when Ronaldo was 20 before he went on to achieve greatness and the football star said not having his dad to see how great he turned out is a big regret for him. 

I have to have these images to show my family. But I really don’t know my father 100 per cent,” he said.

"He was a drunk person. I never spoke with him, like a normal conversation. It was hard."

"To be the number one, and he don’t see nothing, and he don’t see to receive awards,” he also said. 

"My family see, my mum, my brothers, even my old son, but my father, he didn’t see nothing, and it was - he died young."

4. Marriage?

Ronaldo said very good things about his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez and also said that he has thought about getting married to her. 

Why not,” Ronaldo said when he was asked if she could become his wife.

“It’s not the priority, but of course, why not? One day. I’m not... avoid that."

"Don’t make me pressure, please," Ronaldo said when Morgan said he was avoiding getting married. 

"One day. No, we’ll be one day, for sure. It’s my mum’s dream as well. So, one day. Why not?"

5. Love at first sight

Ronaldo also confirmed he met Georgina at a Gucci store and that it was love at first sight. 

"Yes, it was. Geo, is, you know, it’s part of me. She helped me so much. Of course, I’m in love for her,” the Portugal international said. 

"She’s the mum of my kids, and I’m so passion for her, you know. It’s great. She’s my friend. We have conversations, I open the heart for her, she open the heart for me.

"Probably the…"

Morgan interrupts and said: "The greatest love of your life?" "Exactly. This is what I want to say,” Ronaldo responded. 

6. Number of cars 

Ronaldo revealed that he has 17 cars in the interview which include two Bugattis, two Ferraris, two McLarens. and two Rolls-Royces.

He said his favourite is the Rolls-Royce.

7. Networth

Ronaldo was asked if he is worth half a billion and the football star said he is not 100% sure and that he has good money in the bank. 

I think so, I hope so. I think that might be too much,” he said, laughing.

“I am not 100 per cent but what I can say is I have good money in the bank.

8. His mother is banned from watching big games 

The 34-year-old also revealed that his mother is banned from watching his games after she fainted twice during big matches. 

She is not allowed now to watch big game,” he said.

I get friends to stay with her and she goes for walks around the house. She fainted two times in the stadium. She is nervous.

“It is impossible, I don’t have a father anymore and I don’t want to lose my mum, so I told her ‘you will not watch semi-finals or finals anymore’."

9. His favourite goal

Ronaldo said his favourite goal was the overhead kick he scored for Real Madrid against his current club Juventus

I tried to score this goal for many, many years. I had scored 700-odd goals but I hadn’t done this. I thought ‘finally I had scored a bicycle, the beautiful jumping’," he said.

The way I had done against Buffon, against Juventus, in the Champions League. It was a beautiful goal.

When asked if that goal is better than sex, he said; “No, not with my Geo no.”

10. Rivalry with Messi

As expected, the interview didn’t finish without the mention of his rivalry with Lionel Messi although it was done off the record. 

According to Morgan, Ronaldo admitted that competing with the Barcelona superstar improved him. 

"He said to me that with the Messi thing, he said that he felt that both of them were better players because of each other," Morgan said on Good Morning Britain. 

"[Ronaldo] thought that both of them raised each other's game [and] that they wouldn't have been as good if they weren't in competition."
