It was an exciting year in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) which saw Enugu Rangers winning the title against all odds.

A slew of exciting players were responsible for delivering a thrilling season of football which saw 734 goals in 342 matches.

These are our top 10 NPFL players of 2016.

1. Godwin Obaje (Wikki Tourist)

Godwin Obaje finished the 2016 NPFL season as the highest goal scorer with 18 goals to help Wikki Tourist to a third place finish.

The striker will get the sum of N100, 000 from the Rashidi Yekini Foundation as a reward for being the highest goal scorer in the 2015/2016 NPFL season.

2. Emeka Nwabulu (Wikki Tourists)

Wikki Tourist goalkeeper Emeka Nwabulu was impressive for Tourist last season as they finished third on the NPFL table.

Nwabulu recorded (11) clean sheet and his team conceded least goals 28 and finished with best goal difference (+17). He took home the Player of the Month for June by the League Bloggers’ Awards

He was also part of the NPFL all-stars that went on a tour of Spain.

3. Chisom Egbuchulam (Enugu Rangers)

Chisom Egbuchulam netted 16 goals last season as Enugu Rangers won their first NPFL title in 32 years. He also recorded nine assists last season, the most by a player and contributed to 25 out of 53 goals scored by Rangers

4. Ismaila Gata (FC Ifeanyi Ubah)

Gata was the third highest goalscorer in the league with 14 goals and was also part of the NPFL All-Star team that travelled to Spain. Gata was impressive as FC IfeanyiUbah won the 2016 Federation Cup title.

He's also in the running for the best player of the league award.

5. Bernard Ovoke (Rivers United)

Ovoke also impressed in the NPFL last season as Rivers United finished in the second position to qualify for the CAF Champions League. The forward netted nine times in the league last season.  Many have predicted that he will become even a bigger player next season.

6. Seka Pascal (FC IfeanyiUbah)

Pascal is one of the best players of 2016 Federation Cup winners, FC IfeanyiUbah. The Ivorian’s darting run troubled his opponents all through the 2015/2016 season. He possesses quick feet and has a strong physique which makes him a handful for defenders.

7. Rabiu Ali (Kano Pillars)

Vice-captain of Kano Pillars Rabiu Ali also impressed last in 2016 as he helped the Masu Gida to a seventh place finish in the NPFL.

A great passer of the ball, the dead ball specialist is reportedly the most paid player in the NPFL with a monthly salary of N8000, 000.

8. Mathew Etim (Enugu Rangers)

After helping Enugu Rangers to their first NPFL title in 32 years, Mathew Etim can be regarded as the best right-back of 2016.

After his impressive outing last season for Rangers, Etim is now one of the most sought players in the NPFL ahead of the 2016/2017 season.

The defender played for the Super Eagles under Sunday Oliseh.

9. Ifeanyi Ifeanyi (MFM)

Ifeanyi Ifeanyi play Ifeanyi Ifeanyi (NPFL)


Ifeanyi was an ever present for the Olukoya Boys with top-notch performances in the 2015/2016 season.

The former Nigeria U-20 Ifeanyi was instrumental as MFM retained NPFL status in their first season at the division.

10. Obinna Nwobodo (Enugu Rangers)

Nwobo netted seven goals for Rangers, helping the Enugu side to an unexpected title in 2016.

The former youth international also had several assists.
