Ex-Super Eagles star loses MLS MVP to Robbie Keane

Keane had a record of 19 goals and 14 assists, two more than the Nigerian who recorded more assists

Seattle Sounders striker Obafemi Martins was beaten to the honour for the best footballer of the year in the American Major League Soccer, MLS by former Tottenham and Liverpool forward Robbie Keane.

The Irish international scored 19 goals and made 14 assists to beat Martins and New England Revolution’s Lee Nguyen.

Martins’ 17 goals and 13 assists were not able to place him ahead Keane and Nguyen with 18 goals, a record goals scored by a midfielder.

Keane, 34 year-old has won two titles with club, LA Galaxy and stands the chance for a third this weekend when they face New England Revolution.

Martins and Keane came face to face with each other in the playoffs for the Western Conference final and it was the Republic of Ireland captain who ran away winner after he lost out in the Supporters’ Shield to the Sounders.
