Nigerian and now former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has been confirmed as the highest goalscorer of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). 

After the final between Algeria and Senegal played on Friday, July 19, Ighalo has been confirmed as the AFCON 2019 Golden Boot winner and also made it to the tournament’s best starting XI.

Ighalo scored five goals in Egypt 2019- one in the group stage, a double against Cameroon in the second round, and a goal each against Algeria and Tunisia

The 30-year-old finished two goals above Riyad Mahrez, Adam Ounas, Cedric Bakambu and Sadio Mane

With this feat, Ighalo became the sixth Nigerian player after Segun Odegbami, Rashidi Yekini, Julius Aghahowa, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha and Emmanuel Emenike to win AFCON’s Golden Boot. 

Ighalo is also the only Nigerian player in AFCON 2-19 best XI released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Senegal had the most players in the starting XI with five of their players while Algeria got four.  

Algeria’s Ismael Bennacer was named the Man of the Competition, his teammate Rais M’Bolhi got the best goalkeeper award while Best Young Player of AFCON 2019 went to Krepin Diatta of Senegal.
