Nigerian performances that inspired us at the weekend

Which of the nation’s stars thrived across the major leagues over the weekend?

Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi

Victor Osimhen

The in-form marksman scored a bullet header in the game’s closing stages to preserve Napoli’s 100 percent record as they defeated Torino 1-0.

Osimhen’s strike was just reward for the level of effort he put in for the entirety of the game, not only pressing the opposition but also carrying the ball aggressively upfield and fashioning opportunities for himself and his teammates.

Luciano Spalletti’s marksman is now up to five Serie A goals, only two behind Lazio’s Ciro Immobile who sits top of the scorers log after eight game weeks.

Taiwo Awoniyi

Awoniyi netted in Union Berlin’s 2-0 success over Wolfsburg on Saturday as the Berlin outfit extended their unbeaten home run to 21 games.

It was the striker’s sixth Bundesliga goal of the campaign, surpassing his tally from the entirety of last season after only eight matches.

Union rose to fifth spot in the table after a third successive win in the league.

Simy

Despite Salernitana’s loss at Spezia, Simy finally opened his account for the strugglers.

Having gone seven games without scoring for Fabrizio Castori’s troops, the Crotone loanee opened the scoring after 39 minutes to notch his first Serie A strike of 2021/22.

Even though Salernitana couldn’t hold on against Thiago Motta’s side, Castori will hope Simy returns to form as the Garnets battle for survival.
