Ex-French international appointed player/coach of Indian club, Mumbai City FC

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor wo is one of the owners of the club said he is thrilled with Nicolas Anelka's appointment as he has impressed them of his knowledge of football


Former Arsenal, Real Madrid and Cheslea striker, Nicolas Anelka has been appointed player/coach of Indian Super Laague side, Mumbai City FC.

After playing for a number of clubs all over Europe and Asia, Anelka joined Mumbai City FC in September 2014.

Less than a year later at the the 36-year-old has take on the dual role as the club's marquee player/manager.

The club announced Anelka their new manager through their official account, sharing a  cartoon depiction of the player wearing a smart, black suit.

"I would like to say thank you to the Mumbai City FC staff for giving me the opportunity to coach the club," Anelka said in a statement.

"We are all very excited to start this new season.

"I'm personally very eager to take on this new role for the club and put a strong, competitive team on the pitch."

This is not the striker's first attempt at this dual role as he was also the player/coach of Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua in April 2012.

Mumbai City FC is owned by Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor and other investors.

Kapoor said he is thrilled with the appointment as he has impressed them of his knowledge of football.

"I'm thrilled to have Nicolas as our marquee player-cum-manager," Kapoor said.

"Last year, he impressed us all with his tactical knowledge and excellent motivational skills.

"It's a role both parties have been discussing for a couple of months and it's been a great start.

"We will provide Nicolas all the support required to try and win the league this year."
