MTN Football Scholar Novelty match hits UNEC

The MTN Football Scholar continued in Enugu after formally kicking off in University of Abuja last week

The MTN Football Scholar Season 5 train hit the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus where a novelty match was played on Friday, July 31.

It formally kicked off last week at the University of Abuja and it was the turn of Students of UNEC who were treated to a package of exciting football action and entertainment.

In Enugu, the MTN Football Scholars took on the UNEC academy team in a novelty match which finished 3-1 in the favour of the scholars.

The novelty match is the second in a 4 legged series of the season 5 of the MTN Football Scholars initiative of MTN.

Speaking on the initiative, coach of the UNEC team, Christian Okongwo said the platform is a step in the right direction in helping youngsters to gain the exposure they require for their career growth in football.

I must say that this program by MTN is very good. It is exciting to see something like this happen for young talents in football," Okongwo said.

"It is a good platform for these young footballers to expose themselves to enhance their football career.

Most Valuable Player of the UNEC team; Joseph Okorie won himself a 250,000 scholarship and a Samsung smartphone courtesy of MTN.

Pop star Iyanya was also there to thrill the excited crowd to a performance of some of some of his hiot songs.

Spectators at the match were handsomely rewarded for their participation as some were given smartphones, T-shirts, airtime and goodie bags from the main sponsor MTN.

The Federal University of Akure also played host to Scholars on Sunday August 2, being the 3rd novelty match of the series.

The final match will see the scholars tackle the University of Lagos’ finest eleven on Tuesday August 4 at the University Stadium.

The novelty matches are part of efforts to achieve homeground leveraging of the scholars, having returned from football training in USA courtesy of MTN Nigeria. It is also aimed at celebrating the milestones of the initiative since inception.
